Structure Workshop
An Artist's Studio was conceived as a design collaboration between internationally-renowned artist,
Conrad Shawcross and our studio. This collaboration arose between Shawcross and director of Studio Hleo, Richard Andrews through an interest in challenging preconceptions of architecture and its processes.
Working with an original Victorian industrial building surrounded by neighbouring residential properties in East London we worked collaboratively with the resident artist to extend the existing residential space whilst maintaining industrial space necessary to facilitate large-scale sculpture essential to the artist's work.

Designing this project was collaborative between the resident artist Conrad Shawcross and Richard Andrews as they worked together to create a space that ensured a comfortable living quarters for a growing family whilst also allowing large scale structure to be designed and built on site.
Vaulted ceilings create multi-height spaces, inclusive of the building's industrial warehouse origins whilst whitewashed brickwork, original wood floorboards and striking Core Ten cladding that rusts and reddens over time add texture and dimension to soften the industrial elements. An upward extensions saw an addition of bedrooms/bathrooms to expand the residency whilst the workshop extends into a new basement structure.
